Directed Electronics, the company that sells the Viper VSS4000 car-alarm system, has produced an accompanying app called SmartStart that lets customers use their phone to lock or unlock the car, or turn the alarm on and off. It makes a virtual keychain control module that can do things like lock and unlock your vehicle, open the trunk, and activate the alarm, getting rid of the need to carry around one of those keychain clickers as long as you've got your phone handy.
You'll be able to remote start or lock and unlock your automobile simply by pushing a button in your iPhone or iPod Touch or BlackBerry; using the exciting new Viper System VSS4000 SmartStart app from Directed Electronics, the leader in vehicle security and remote start. The simple graphical interface makes you control over the following features of your put in Viper remote start or security/remote start system:Lock/arm, Unlock/disarm, Remote car starter, Trunk launch, Panic or automobile finder.

Viper SmartStart works over the 3G cellular network or over Wi-Fi, giving you virtually unlimited range anywhere in the U.S. So long as your car is in vary of a GSM cellular sign and your phone has a 3G or Wi-Fi sign, SmartStart will work. The app is completely free, but it requires you have Viper's SmartStart system installed in each car you want to take control of. Professional installation is strongly recommended for this product. After installing a remote starter, we've noticed that the car alarm goes off if we use the remote starter when the engine is cold - for example, first thing in the morning. If we start the car "normally" (without the remote), even with the cold engine first thing in the morning, the alarm does *not* go on.
Also, if we use the remote starter other times of the day, when the engine is warm, the alarm doesn't go on.
So, what are your ideas on why the alarm is activated when the remote starter is used and the engine is cold?
Thank you!
@pbleek - thanks, but we have not been using the factory FOB
When your engine is cold does it take a couple of times for it to turn over? I know on my old car when using my remote starter it would take it about two times for the engine to turn over and start up. If you have an anti-theft system it might be protecting from a hot wire or such. That's the only thing I can think of!

let’s not reignite those arguments: it’s just not worth the time.
