Onkyo TX-NR708, Excellent Receiver Aided By The Best Price
The Onkyo TX-NR708 is my very first receiver. It works great. Was slightly skeptic about my abilities to hook the lot up, but bought some banana plugs to the speaker wire and it works very well. Simple to use, interface is great, though I hardly "use" it exclusively (purchased Harmony One also).
It's a little daunting at first as there's a ton of features/settings to play with. The Multi-EQ makes getting awesome sound easy. Movies, music, heck, even regular Tv shows sound simply amazing now.
I would buy this again in any heart beat.
Switching from my 14-year old Yamaha RX-V890 to the Onkyo took few hours, longest part being the effort to tidy up the whole set of wiring. Just swapping really only procured about 30-minutes, but since I will have all HDMI in's and out's, AS I dumped a chunk in HDMI/Monster along with eliminated many bundles of excess some. The switch instantly improved the appear quality of any media I've enjoyed up to now. Because of it's options, the Onkyo remote would most likely replace my $200 Sony universal. Lots of options with this machine. I think all said and done I'll convey more money invested in Monster products than in this particular TX-NR708. My front DefTech's highs-mids are powered with the front pre-out to an Adcom in addition to their internal subs are powered by their internal amps so, the Onkyo's really only powering my surrounds at this moment. Now all I need is about twice the number of effects speakers--since it can handle it. I am a little confused because of the Audyssey DSX options and will need to play around with speaker configs to determine how many speakers I can essentially push; it looks like 7. 2 + 8, 9, 10, 11&12 might be possible.
Wife says I just turned the family unit room into the man-cave, and my son took it over considering the PS3 almost immediately after I finished the Onkyo TX-NR708 calibration--which was easy and pretty cool. And I'm just amazed when using the improvement in the PS3 game audio quality. I'll probably have to ground him just read a Blueray movie!
Monoprice 8247 review: $84 for a 'good enough' 5.1 speaker system (Albuquerque Journal)

Monoprice is an Internet retailer that made a name for itself providing tech
accessories at insanely low prices. (It is, in our opinion, the best place to
buy "good enough" HDMI cables at prices far lower than you'd ever find at Best
Buy.)
Not content with accessories, Monoprice is now branching out into its own
branded line of tech products. Even with Monoprice's reputation for bargains,
we were shocked to see the Monoprice 8247: it's a 5.1 surround-sound speaker
package you can buy for the seemingly impossible price of $84.10. That's less
than $15 per speaker (including the subwoofer) and Monoprice doesn't chintz
out with the accessories, including four swivel wall-mounts for each of the
satellite speakers. The most impressive feat of all is that these ultrabudget
speakers actually sound pretty good.
We won't hype the Monoprice 8247 any more than that. This isn't an audiophile
experience and you shouldn't expect one. The speaker cabinets are made of
plastic instead of wood, although they are surprisingly heavy, which at least
creates the impression of build quality. The speaker connectors are better
than what's available on many budget speakers, but they don't accept banana
plugs.
