How should I go about starting my own car washing business?
Hi. I am 16 and I am thinking about starting a car washing business in the town that I live in. The town has about 4000 people. My dad has a wash bay that he says I can use so I don't need to worry about a place to wash the cars. I would hand wash the cars and clean the insides. I have some questions.
1. What should I name my business?
2. When should I offer to wash the cars (nights, days, weekends, etc.)?
3. How much should I charge? And should I charge different amounts for vehicle size?
4. How should I advertise my business?
5. Should I hire my best friend to help me?
Anything else you can add is greatly appreciated.
You are on the right track.
1-Since this is a small business (just you and maybe a few friends) keep it personal, like "Sam's Car wash and detailing" You want to stand out and not generic
2-Figure out your best schedule, weekends are a big day, especially if the weather is nice, but keep it simple, don't go crazy with the hours. Example Fri from 5pm-8pm Sat/Sun - 10am - 5pm, you can offer by appointment also if you can work out your schedule
3- Tricky - Car washes charge based on 2 things Size of the car (a large truck will take longer to clean so they pay more) and service (are you doing tires, are you detailing, are you waxing)
So you should look around see how most places are set up, and price what you are comfortable with, figure how many cars can you wash in one hour your cost (soap, rags, wax, etc..) then figure how much you want to make in one hour, say you can do 3 cars/hour you want to make $10 your cost is $5 so total you want $15/hour, so $5/car. Take your time with this.
4-Tell everyone, craigslist, flyers, put them on cars.
5-If you can do more cars and say he takes only $5/hour and you are making an extra $10 per hour with him, then yes, be very clear with him and up front, you can pay him by the car. Make sure you are happy and he is happy.
Go have fun
