Find Out How Car Exhaust Systems Work

The combustion engine is the mechanism that creates the power car’s need to get us where we wish to go. Once the combustion stroke inside the engine is complete, gases are formed from the explosion created by the mixture of fuel and air. These emissions must be released, otherwise the engine would stall due to lack of oxygen. A car’s exhaust system is designed to carry emissions away from the engine and release them safely and quietly away from the driving compartment. Here is how a car’s exhaust system works.

Mufflers are utilized in order to quiet the explosion created by the combustion stroke. We often do not realize how loud a firing engine is, because we are used to mufflers. If you have ever been next to a car with a hole in its muffler, it likely drowns out the radio and any conversation you might be having. Some mufflers quiet the firing sequence by way of a restrictive tube passing through sound insulating material, while others employ noise canceling technology. The tail pipe then carries the remaining sound to the back of the car, away from the driver.

Unburned fuel is the source of the emissions that a car’s exhaust system removes from the vehicle. Research on these unburned hydrocarbons has shown a possible adverse effect on the atmosphere, and the catalytic converter is employed to help reduce the danger. This device captures the emissions and re-burns them at a designated temperature. The resulting nitrogen and oxygen exit through the tail pipe. Oxygen sensors are found at various junctures of the exhaust system, and they relay how much oxygen is detected to the car’s computer. The computer, based on this information, then regulates the amount of fuel deposited into the engine. A continuous and steady air to fuel ratio is maintained in this way.

Back pressure is another important concept in the exhaust system. The engine requires adequate back pressure, or resistance, if it is to operate optimally. An exhaust manifold manufactures this pressure and resulting power by removing emissions after combustion, a process known as exhaust scavenging. If an exhaust is attached that is too big, then an excess of air escapes, creating a void of back pressure and lessened performance.

Without the exhaust system, cars would not run properly or at all. If the emissions created from the explosion of fuel and air were not taken away, the engine would run horribly, if it ran at all. They create a quieter ride for the occupants of the car, and with the use of a catalytic converter, they lessen the gases released into the atmosphere. A car’s exhaust system is as vital as any other for a car.

In Victoria (Australia) is it legal to have a muffler eliminator/delete?

OK so I want to get rid of my muffler all together and replace is with a 3" pipe (muffler eliminator) that connects to the same point as what the muffler did.
I cannot find anything about it being 'illegal'. Does anyone know if it is illegal in Victoria [Australia]?

If makes it above 90 decibals then it will be illegal and unroadworthy. Ask a muffler shop if this will cause it to make to much noise. You would be better off getting a hi flow cat with a sports muffler that is difinitely legal.

Should I part out my track car? (need pricing advice) (bimmerforums)

I've been trying to sell my semi-complete 95 M3 track car, but nobody is
buying. It's been for sale...
