Music Without Cords? - An Overview Of Wireless Audio Transmitter Gadgets

A large number of wireless audio transmitter products have emerged over the years. They promise to eliminate the cord to your audio equipment. We will take a look at recent products to find out whether they can deliver on their claim to eliminate the cable clutter and we’ll investigate how changing technology has impacted performance of these products.

AM and FM radio was introduced several decades ago and was the first type of wireless audio transmission. FM radio is still popular today. However, newer technologies have started to replace it. These include DAB broadcasts, satellite and HD radio. Today's wireless consumer products such as wireless speaker kits, baby monitors, Bluetooth audio transmitters and wireless microphones cut the cord.

Many homes which are not wired for audio are perfect for using wireless audio to distribute music all through the home. We will take a look at the advantages and drawbacks of today's wireless audio technologies.

One of the most traditional technologies is FM broadcasting. Audio is transmitted via a radio-frequency signal which is modulated (changed in frequency) with an audio signal. The technology, which is known as frequency modulation (FM), is fairly straightforward and cost-effective to build and offers high range. As a consequence, the majority of today’s 900 MHz wireless headphones utilize FM transmission. However, FM has some major drawbacks.

The FM signal will pick up hiss. Therefore there will be noticeable background noise. The amount of static will depend on the location of the transmitter and radio. FM radio waves are often reflected by walls and obstacles. This will cause several components to cancel each other out as a result causing a varying signal quality in different locations. This phenomenon is called multipath fading. Using two antennae is one technique some devices utilize to cope with this problem (diversity receivers). Another problem is that FM radios easily pick up interference from competing wireless transmitters.

Bluetooth based audio transmitters have gained popularity lately. Bluetooth is a popular wireless protocol which was designed primarily as an interface between computer peripheral products. Bluetooth will convert he audio into a digital format. This data is then broadcast via the Bluetooth wireless protocol. One of the advantages is the high robustness against wireless interference. However, Bluetooth was not designed for audio transmissions. Therefore is does have several problems. The range of the transmission is only 30 ft or less. Also, Bluetooth does not have enough space to send an uncompressed CD-quality audio signal. Consequently the audio is compressed prior to the transmission. This compression will result in a loss of audio quality depending on the amount of compression. Another problem is that Bluetooth will introduce a delay or latency to the signal during the transmission. This delay is a particular problem for video and surround sound applications. In these applications the sound from the wireless speakers would be out of sync with the video and remaining speakers.

Satellite radio and digital terrestrial radio technologies offer high range but use extensive audio compression leading to degradation of the audio signal and have an audio delay of more than a few seconds.

Another technology transmits the audio signal without compression digitally. This technology is used in wireless audio transmitters from Amphony. The signal will keep the original quality by eliminating audio compression. This technology offers an audio latency of less than 1 ms. Therefore these transmitters can be used for wireless speaker kits in a home theater system and other real-time applications.

This technology is quite robust against radio interference from other wireless transmitters by employing a technique known as forward error correction. The Amphony transmitters operate at 5.8 GHz. This frequency space is less crowded than the 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz bands as a result leading to a further improvement of reliability. Other than Bluetooth, this technology can operate any number of receivers per transmitter which is key for sending audio to several locations throughout the home.

Day of Silence - Did you participate?

I contacted my congressman and below you will see his response:

On March 2, 2007, the Copyright Royalty Board of the Library of Congress issued a ruling that proposes changing royalty rates from a percentage of revenue to a per-song, per-listener fee for online radio stations. The new rates will be retroactive to 2006 and will be increased incrementally each year through 2010. For 2007, online radio stations would pay $0.0011 per-song per-listener.

On May 10, 2007, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act (S. 1353). This legislation would reverse the Copyright Royalty Board's ruling and would instead apply the same royalty rate-setting standard to Internet radio, satellite radio, cable radio, and jukeboxes. S. 1353 has been referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, where it awaits further consideration.
___________

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger what will you do to help?

I think the RIAA is out of control. I refuse to buy new CDs, but actually buy used ones.
